MP JOY SMITH SUPPORTS JOINT POSITION DOCUMENT ON CONDUCTED ENERGY WEAPONS |
Ottawa, ON: Joy Smith, Member of Parliament for Kildonan – St. Paul, strongly supports the joint position on conducted energy weapons (CEWs) issued by Canada"s two national police associations. On Tuesday February 24, 2009, the Canadian Police Association (CPA) and the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP), released a joint position document that supports the use of CEWs and clarifies the position of Canadian police with respect to the need for and appropriate use of conducted energy weapons, as well as the risks associated with this and other authorized forms of force used by police in performing their lawful duties. "It is crucial that Canada's police officers retain the use of this non lethal option," said MP Joy Smith. "Conducted energy weapons are an important tool that police officers use to apprehend violent individuals that may pose a risk to themselves, the public and police officers. This joint position document provides a clear mandate for the use of conducted energy weapons by Canada's police force."
